AUM is the all encompassing cosmic vibration of the universe. The word AUM is defined by Hindu scripture as being the primordial sound of creation. It is the original vibration of the universe. From this first vibration, all other vibrations are able to manifest.
Although ॐ symbol is widely recognized, only a limited number of individuals truly understand the significance behind the combination of curves, crescent, and dot that constitute its visual representation.
Curves (ॐ) AUM - The symbol contains three curves that represent the three states of consciousness
A stands for the waking state (Jagruti), where the mind is engaged in external activities and experiences.
U represents the dream state (Swapna), where the mind is more internalized, experiencing dreams and subconscious thoughts.
M symbolizes the state of deep sleep (Sushupti), where the mind is at rest and merged with the universal consciousness.
Crescent (Half Moon) - The crescent shape symbolizes the illusion or Maya, which is the material world that we perceive. It also represents the mind and its changing nature.
Dot (.) - The dot at the top of the symbol represents the absolute state of consciousness, known as Turiya. It signifies the ultimate reality, the state of pure awareness, and the source of all creation.
Collectively, the Om symbol embodies the entire universe, including the past, present, and future. It represents the unity of all creation, the eternal sound, and the ultimate truth of existence. Chanting or meditating on Om is believed to have profound spiritual and psychological benefits, leading to inner peace, harmony, and higher states of consciousness.
How we Pronounce Aum?
The initial syllable is A, articulated as a protracted "awe." The resonance originates from the back of your throat, and you extend its duration deliberately. As you do so, you'll notice vibrations in your solar plexus and chest area.
The second syllable is U, pronounced as a prolonged oo, with the sound gradually rolling forward along your upper palate. You'll feel your throat vibrate.
The third syllable is M, pronounced as a prolonged mmmm with your front teeth gently touching. You will now start to feel the top of your mouth vibrate.
The last syllable is the deep silence of the Infinite. As intelligence rises from the deep silence, you have to merge your chant from the M to the deep silence.
Everything around us is in a perpetual state of pulsation and vibration, with nothing ever truly still. When we chant the sacred sound "AUM," it aligns itself with the natural frequency of 432 Hz, reflecting the vibrational essence present in all elements of the universe. Thus, AUM becomes the fundamental sound of creation. By participating in this chant, we not only symbolically but also physically acknowledge our deep connection to nature and all living entities. In conclusion, integrating AUM into the beginning or conclusion of your spiritual practice can foster a profound and meaningful connection with the essence of existence itself.
