The Usage of Mask

The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests using masks only when ill with CoVID-19 symptoms, especially coughing, or looking after someone who may have CoVID-19. It is not advisable to use a mask when not ill. A disposable face mask can be used only once. There is a world-wide shortage of masks, so WHO urges the citizens of the world to use masks wisely.

Steps to put-on, use, take off and dispose a mask

• A mask should be primarily used by health workers, caretakers, and individuals with symptoms, such as fever and cough.

•Before touching the mask, one must clean hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

•Take the mask and inspect it for tears or holes. This is to ensure zero penetration of germs into the mask.

•Orient the top side of the mask. The topside of any mask will have a metal strip.

•Ensure the proper side of the mask faces outwards. This is generally the colored side of the mask.

•Place the mask on the face. Pinch the metal strip or stiff edge so it molds to the shape of the nose.

•Pull down the mask’s bottom so it covers the mouth and chin.

•After use, take off the mask, remove the elastic loops from behind the ears while keeping the mask away from the face and clothes, to avoid touching potentially contaminated surfaces of the mask.

•Discard the mask in a closed bin immediately after use.

•Perform hand hygiene after touching or discarding the mask.
