Jatayu is a prominent character in the Indian epic, the Ramayana. He is a vulture and a noble bird of great strength and wisdom. Jatayu plays a significant role in the Ramayana when he encounters Ravana attempting to abduct Sita, the wife of Lord Rama.
In the epic, Jatayu valiantly tries to rescue Sita from Ravana's clutches. Despite being elderly, Jatayu engages in a fierce battle with Ravana to protect Sita. However, he is ultimately defeated by Ravana, who severs his wings, leaving him mortally wounded.
Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana later encounter Jatayu. In his dying moments, Jatayu informs them of Sita's abduction and provides crucial information about Ravana's direction of flight. Jatayu's sacrifice and bravery are highly revered in Hindu mythology, symbolizing loyalty, valor, and selflessness.
