The prominent tale of Gokarna centers on the Atmalinga, a sacred idol of Lord Shiva. In Hindu mythology, Ravana, the formidable demon king of Lanka, was a devoted worshiper of Lord Shiva. Seeking immortality and divine powers, Ravana undertook a demanding penance at Mount Kailash, the divine abode of Lord Shiva. Having been pleased by Ravana's unwavering devotion and determination, Lord Shiva manifested before him, extending an offer to fulfill any wish. Fueled by his ambitious aspirations, Ravana sought the Atmalinga—a divine and invincible representation embodying Lord Shiva's essence, believed to render him invincible—to be transported back to Lanka. Despite admonitions from sages and gods cautioning him about the potential repercussions of possessing such extraordinary power, Ravana remained resolute in his determination.
Lord Shiva granted Ravana's wish with a condition: the Atmalinga must not touch the ground on the way to Lanka, or it would become immovable. Carrying the Atmalinga, Ravana started his journey. Concerned about the potential chaos, gods sought Lord Vishnu's help. Lord Vishnu, realizing Ganapati was the solution, sent him to Gokarna.
As Ravana approached, Lord Vishnu, aware of Ravana's disciplined prayers, hid the sun. Thinking it was time for his evening rites, Ravana asked a Brahmin boy (Ganesha) to hold the Atmalinga. Ganapati agreed with the condition that he would call Ravana thrice and place the linga on the ground if Ravana didn't respond.
Ganapati called Ravana three times during his prayers, placed the linga on the ground, and vanished. The Atmalinga firmly entrenched in the earth. Ravana, upset, threw the coverings to Dhareshwara, Gunavanteshwara, Murudeshwara, and Shejjeshwar, creating sacred temples. Unable to lift the linga, Ravana named it Mahabala (great strength). The Atmalinga stayed in Gokarna, known as Mahabaleshwara, symbolizing Lord Shiva's presence and a sacred pilgrimage site. The Mahabaleshwar Temple in Gokarna is believed to house this divine Atmalinga.
Gokarna is famed not only for its grand temples but also for its distinctive cave temples, contributing to the town's mystical allure with their captivating legends. One noteworthy site is Koti Tirtha, a sacred tank believed to cleanse all sins. Legend recounts that Garuda, the mystic bird, once carried away Saptashrungi mountain (Lord Brahma’s abode). When Lord Brahma commanded Garuda to place it down, it partially landed in the sea, submerging half of its tirthas. The remaining one crore tirthas, or sacred streams, were believed to be set on the ground in Gokarna, forming Koti Tirtha. The annual Koti Linga pilgrimage, held during Karthika Masa (October to November), draws thousands of pilgrims seeking divine blessings through a bath in the holy waters.
Another notable cave temple is the Shree Bhadrakali Temple, dedicated to the fierce form of Goddess Parvati, known as Bhadrakali. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this temple emanates a unique aura, symbolizing the delicate yet formidable aspects of the divine feminine. These sites offer a profound exploration into the rich and fascinating legends of Gokarna, providing a cultural experience of the town.

Yes, I have visited Gokarna and deeply felt the essence of the sacred Atmalinga. Seeing the place so close to the seashore enhanced its spiritual aura, and I couldn't help but feel that the stories we’ve heard about the Atmalinga at Gokarna truly happened.
