Significance of Mehndi (Henna)

The Mughals introduced the history of Mehndi to India during the 12th century AD and taught us all about it. During that period, the royal and wealthy classes used to decorate themselves with intricate patterns made by artists or beauticians. Today, Mehndi is an essential part of Indian weddings, and the ceremony is incomplete without it. In the Telugu states, the Ashada Masam is synonymous with Gorintaku, also known as Mehendi.

The leaves of the henna bush are processed to make a skin conditioner and a reliever for rashes. The henna used for mehndi comes from this bush, which is grown in Africa and India. Henna is also used as a hair dye and conditioner.

Mehndi, also known as henna, is a paste that is associated with positive spirits and good luck. The reason why people apply mehndi during Ashadam is that women are in constant contact with water while doing household chores, which can irritate the skin on their hands and legs and cause fungal infections between their toes. Many studies have found that henna has an antifungal effect and could be used as a substitute for drugs to treat fungal infections. Applying mehndi to the bride and groom before the wedding is one of the oldest Indian traditions.
