Prevent than to Repent and Feel Sorry

For any person learning to drive, it can be a daunting yet exciting task for them. Gaining your drivers license after attending driving school is a very important step in ones life. Having passed your driving test you may now feel ready to tackle anything that confronts you on the road, but what exactly could those things be? Read on for the top 10 mistakes drivers can make that result in accidents or death.

#1 - Drinking and driving. The numbers of accidents involving alcohol tell a sad tale. Alcohol is a factor in 40% of driving related deaths that occur each year. Of that, 60% of people are of the age 16 to 24 which shows that with a lack of experience comes a lack of judgement. Thankfully, the solution is very simple; do not drink and then drive.

#2 - Texting while driving. Mobile phone related car accidents are on the rise but new laws have banned the use of a mobile phone while driving and this has recently been updated to reflect sending an sms while driving a vehicle. Pull your car over to the side of the road if it's urgent otherwise call the person back once you have arrived at your destination. Just makes sense.

#3 - Road rage. Every year people are needlessly injured or killed due to disputes or altercations that occur on the roads. Studies have shown that drivers who experience aggression from other drivers are inclined to respond in an aggressive manner themselves. Put simply, this puts many more people at risk. Be an adult about the situation and let it go as nothing it worth losing your own or another person life over.

#4 - No car seat. Did you know that car crashes are a leading cause of death for children between the ages of 2 to 14 years. It is also the leading cause of injury-related death for children between the ages of 0-2 years. Be sure to purchase a car seat if you plan to have a child occupy a seat in your vehicle.

#5 - Speeding. This one is surprising given everyone knows it's important to slow down. Did you know speeding is involved in 15% of all car accidents and 35% of all fatal crashes. The faster you drive, the less reaction time you give to yourself and other drivers. This is much worse in sub-optimal conditions and the statistics also reflect this. Slow down and do so in less than perfect conditions.

#6 - The weather. Sometimes this cannot be avoided but driving in bad weather conditions contribute to 20% of fatal highway accidents. This goes back to number #5, if you must drive in these conditions, slow down.

#7 - Poor eyesight. There is a good reason why you're required to take an eye test when you renew your drivers license. Being unable to spot obstacles on the road reduces your ability to drive in a safe manner. If you're required to wear glasses, get your eyes tested regularly.

#8 - Not wearing a seat belt. Seat belts are the most effective way of preventing your death in a car accident. It's estimated that roughly 5,000 deaths could be avoided each year if those people would simply wear a seat belt. Maybe it's time you started wearing yours.

#9 - Oversteering. A defensive driving school can help with this one as they will take you by the hand and show you how to brake accordingly so that you do not skid or oversteer your vehicle.

#10 - Fatigue. Driving while tired or fatigued is a major cause of car accidents. Practice driver revival techniques and take breaks or swap drivers every 2 hours.

Now that you've read the top 10 factors that lead to car accidents, be sure to discuss this with your friends, family or even your driving instructor for further advice how you can remain safe on the road.
