Sanskrit - "Dev Vani"

Sanskrit is the sacred language of Hinduism, the language of classical Hindu philosophy, and of historical texts of Buddhism and Jainism. It is also called "Dev Vani" (the language of gods) as it is said that Brahma introduced this language to the Sages of celestial bodies. There is a misconception that Sanskrit language is only a language for chanting mantras in temples or religious ceremonies. That, actually, is less than 5% of the Sanskrit literature, more than 95% of which has nothing to do with religion.

Sanskrit belongs to the Indo-European family of languages. The earliest form of Sanskrit is that used in the Rig Veda (called Old Indic or Rigvedic Sanskrit). Amazingly, Rigvedic Sanskrit was first recorded in inscriptions found not on the plains of India but in what is now northern Syria. Sanskrit is originated as Vedic Sanskrit as early as 1700-1200 BCE, and was orally preserved as a part of the Vedic chanting tradition. The scholar Panini standardized Vedic Sanskrit into Classical Sanskrit when he defined the grammar, around 500 BCE. Sanskrit is the language of knowledge, the scientific language. Sanskrit is mother of 6,909 languages used in the world. The richest language in the world, it has more words than in any other language.

At present, Sanskrit dictionary has 102.78 billion words! There are innumerable words in Sanskrit for one word. In 21st Century, people have once again realised the importance of Sanskrit. For, more than in India, it is studied abroad.

Sanskrit is the only language that can unite the whole country. The glory of Sanskrit literature is immense. Panchatantra and Hitopadesh, useful in sowing the seeds of Samskara in children, are in Sanskrit. Sanskrit is like the ocean, the pearls of which are poets like Kalidasa, Bhasa, Magh, Bhavabhuti.
