The Benefits And Dangers Of Television

Television has changed our lives in many ways. Many people now spend more time watching TV than doing anything else. Researches in the USA have estimated that when most students leave school they have spent 11,000 hours in the classroom and 22,000 hours watching television.

However, television offers both benefits and dangers to us. Firstly, television helps us to learn about the world and to know and see many new things. It can often present information to us in a more effective way than books can and make things more memorable. Secondly, it entertains us, as it represents an enjoyable means to relax. For millions of people around the world, television is the source of companionship and helps them to cope with the everyday life. Moreover, television has increased the popularity of sports and arts. People are able to see all types of sports on TV and watch very important football matches that take place at a certain moment in a foreign country. In what concerns arts, there are many interesting documentaries that offer the viewer the possibility to enrich his or her culture in different domains. Last but not least, television made us aware of our global responsibilities. In 1985, for example, 1.5 billion people in 147 countries watched a TV pop concert and helped collect more than $100 million for people in Africa.

In what concerns the dangers offered by television we have to point in the first place the fact that television can make us passive. We don't have to think and our brains become lazy. It, then, encourages us to buy things that we don't need, and can make us unhappy with our own lives. If we keep on watching several movies that show how prosperous lives is for some of us and how difficult for others, then we will feel confused to see how unjust in life for some people. Likewise, watching TV doesn't permit us to do other activities such as reading, conversation, and games. We install ourselves in front of the TV and we keep on watching for a couple of hours without even realizing how much time has passed.

Unfortunately, there are times when TV offers a false picture of society. A study in 1994 showed that people who watch a lot of television are more afraid of crime. They also think that there is a lot more crime than there really is. Some critics say that television makes people violent. A ten-year study the United States showed that children who watch violent television programmes are more likely to be violent themselves.
