Falun Dafa - Traditional Self Improvement Practice for Mind and Body

Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong) is a high-level spiritual practice of mind and body. From a remote age this system has been passed down from a single master to a single disciple.

Falun Dafa was simplified by Mr. Li Hongzhi and introduced to the public in China in May 1992. Today, more than 100 million people are practicing it in over 114 countries. Falun Dafa and its founder, Mr Li Hongzhi, have been awarded more than 1,500 awards and proclamations worldwide. Mr Li Hongzhi has also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Independent thoughts.

‘Falun’ means Law Wheel and ‘Dafa’ means Great Path. It is based on the fundamental principles of the universe: Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance. Because Falun Dafa is a holistic system of mind and body, it also includes five gentle and effective exercises, but the emphasis is placed on cultivation of mind or moral character. With the improvement of moral character, the body undergoes extensive transformation.

For cultivation of the body 5 exercises are taught in this system, which are as follows:

Exercise 1: Buddha Showing a Thousand Hands Exercise

This exercise opens all the energy channels of the body so that the flow of energy in the body can be unrestricted. While practicing this exercise, the body will feel warm and will experience a unique feeling as if there is a very strong energy field. This exercise is practiced as the basic exercise of Falun Gong, and is usually done first. It is one of the methods to strengthen spiritual practice.

Exercise 2: Falun Standing Stance Exercise

This exercise is done in standing meditative position with four postures. After exercise, the whole body will feel light without feeling of any tiredness. This exercise opens up the whole body and increases endurance. Falun standing stance exercise is a method of intensive meditation, which increases wisdom, raises level and strengthens divine powers.

Exercise 3: Penetrating the Two Cosmic Extremes Exercise

The purpose of this exercise is to mix and merge the universe’s energy with the energy inside the body. This results in purification of the body. In a very short time, practitioners can remove pathogenic qi from their body and can take the energy of the universe in sufficient quantity, which makes their body clean and pure.

Exercise 4: Falun Cosmic Orbit Exercise

This exercise enables the human body’s energy to circulate over large areas. This exercise goes far beyond the usual methods of opening up the meridians and the great and small cosmic orbits. This exercise uses the Law Wheel’s rotation to rectify all abnormal conditions in the human body.

Exercise 5: Exercise to Strengthen Divine Powers

This practice is a high-level meditation practice, which strengthens a person’s strength and divine powers. The full-lotusposition is preferable, though the half-lotus position is also acceptable. During the exercise, the flow of qi is strong and the energy field around the body is large.

Health Benefits

Cultivation of moral character is primary in Falun Dafa; exercise and meditation are necessary, but supplementary. According to the book Zhuan Falun, written by Master Li Hongzhi, “… the root cause of failing to increase one’s cultivation energy is that of the two words”cultivation”and”practice”, people only pay attention to practice and ignore cultivation. Every aspect of moral character must be improved for you to make real progress. This is a crucial factor in improving gong potency. Once you improve your moral character, your body will undergo a great change. Upon moral character improvement, the matter in your body is guaranteed to transform.”

Dr. Au, a Taiwanese orthopaedic physician and practitioner of martial arts and Tai Chi for 15 years, left all this to Falun Dafa. He says that physical formation and accumulation of energy through training is like collecting money, which is limited only to this life. “It all ends after your death. Only Falun Dafa can liberate you from your past karma and in this lifetime paves the way for the enlightenment through cultivation of mind, body and soul.”

In China, a large number of surveys were conducted in 1998 to assess the effectiveness of health benefits of Falun Dafa. More than 12,700 completed questionnaires were analyzed. About half of the respondents (52.6%) had practiced Falun Dafa for 1 to 3 years, and 49.8% reported three types of illness. Only 6.6% reported being healthy prior to taking up the practice. At the time of the survey, 58.5% reported full recovery, 24.9% reported basic recovery, and 15.7% partial recovery. Those who reported feeling energetic increased from 3.5% to 55.3% after taking up the practice, and 80.3% reported significant improvement in overall mental health.
