3-4 slices of lime
6 large mint leaves
3/4 ounce simple syrup
4-5 juicy blackberries
2 ounces white rum
ice
soda water
Collins glass
straw
Place the lime, mint leaves, blackberries, and simple syrup in a Collins glass. Using a muddler or a wooden spoon, mash it all up really good. Add the rum and fill the glass with ice. Top with soda water and stir together. Add a straw and enjoy like a boss.
Feel free to mess around with this recipe. The rum can be switched out with Cachaça or even a bit of Bourbon if you want to mix it up something nice and smoky.
Blueberries make a lovely substitution for blackberries. Use strawberries and a bit of basil along with the mint. Maybe muddle in cilantro and and cucumber with the lime; though I suppose at this point can we even call it a mojito? Shiso also makes a lovely stand-in for the mint if you can find it and makes it a bit wilder in flavor.
A few people enjoy using straight-up superfine sugar instead of simple syrup. Superfine is a grade between regular table sugar and powdered sugar and will dissolve in liquid. Using powdered will make the cocktail cloudy so avoid, avoid, avoid.
Lastly, feel free to use 7-Up in place of the soda water for something a little more sweet.
